Bio
Carys is a Welsh-Canadian actor, writer and director who spends her time between Cardiff, Toronto and Calgary. Most recently, she worked with Welsh National Opera as their Filmmaker in Residence where she created a trilogy of films – GRAM GIRL, ALT, and FLUORESCENCE. She is co-writing a feature film with playwright Trey Anthony – HOW BLACK MOTHERS SAY I LOVE YOU, supported by TeleFilm Canada & Ffilm Cymru Wales, optioned by Conquering Lion Pictures. The team is adapting the story for TV – HOW WE SAY ‘I LOVE YOU’ is in development with the CBC. Carys recently wrote and directed a BFI funded comedy called STUFFED, which is now making the festival circuit. Her Welsh-language short film, AFIACH, premiered at the Iris Prize Festival and was screened on BBC iplayer and S4C. Her award-winning documentary short, ERNEST, premiered at the Wales International Documentary Festival. In 2018, Carys collaborated with revolutionary filmmaker Erika Lust and created DON’T TOUCH THE ART, an experimental short film funded by Lust Films. As an advocate for equal representation of women in front of and behind the camera, Carys is the founder of two organisations – FEM SCRIPT LAB, a writing lab for female and non-binary screenwriters in Toronto, and has launched the sister branch of the lab – SHIFFT SCRIPT LAB in the UK. Carys is part of BAFTA Crew 2018/2019 and is a proud graduate of George Brown Theatre School.
Don’t Touch The Art…Touch Me
Museums are places of refined beauty and quiet reflection. They’re also full of sexy strangers, lustful paintings, stolen glances, and hidden corners… DON’T TOUCH THE ART is a playful homage to the feminist groups like ‘Guerilla Girls’ who devoted themselves to fighting sexism within the art world. The film reclaims typically male-dominated environments, which are museums, and explores female sexuality, from a female artists point of view.
